Fear & blessings

I can’t turn on the CBC radio or TV these days without slipping into bone chilling fear. I’m normally very open to listening to whatever their news-based programming is serving up and consider it my daily dose of reality beyond the streets of my lake-side neighbourhood. My Grandma always listened while she worked through her day too. While I’m not sure my kids don’t hear “too much” from the regular drone of the radio, I feel the need to stay connected. (more…)

Consumerism make me shiver with the cold

Eyes bright with wonder and excitement, my daughter looks to me to explain to her the many contradictions of the Christmas season. She doesn’t describe them to me that way, but they feel that way coming out of my mouth. At the heart of it is my on-going concern — that my kids will take for granted their good fortune, now and all year. (more…)

Having vs. becoming

I became acutely aware, early in my second trimester, that Planet Baby was a stage which served to transition me from being a pregnant woman to being someone’s mother. This sounds obvious — but the distinction was about the sense that it was not just about “having a baby”. I was becoming someone’s mother and it made me sit up and pay attention.
